UWT Undocumented Migration Glossary UWT Undocumented Migration Glossary

The UWT project aims to challenge existing terminology used in debates about undocumented migration, and has produced a glossary of terms related to migration that considers the implications of the use of terms for those defined by them and in wider society.

Those without a right to reside in the host country are frequently referred to as ‘illegal migrants’. The UWT project rejects the use of this term to describe individuals, believing, along with many migrant organisations, that it has a connotation with criminality, and that most undocumented migrants are not criminals. The terms ‘undocumented’, ‘irregular’, ‘semi-compliant’ and ‘non-compliant' are all preferred, and are discussed and defined in the glossary, along with more than 20 other terms and concepts.

It is hoped that the glossary will be of use to others carrying out research in this area, and to policy makers concerned with migration issues.
